If you listen closely when you wake up tomorrow, you may just hear the collective sigh of relief of millions of people. March 20th marks the first day of spring and for a lot of people, myself included, the 2020/2021 winter will go down as one of the longest winters in earth's history, at least from a psychological standpoint.
With many areas of the country on social lockdown, being stuck at home for 4 months has given us ample time to foster a much closer relationship with the couch, tv, saturated fats and alcohol. Not ideal companions when the news cycle throughout the winter found a way to make news of the vaccine seem depressing with all the talk of variants.
But here we are, March 20th; spring has arrived. Even though it is just another day it marks a big milestone for getting through this. For a lot of us the warmer weather brings the prospect of gathering with friends outside. Here in BC, we can now gather in groups of up to 10. Is this how Tim Robbin's character felt when he finally escaped Shawshank?
Spring also marks a big shift for my photography as it means the animals are finally coming back out. Just last week I was woken up by the sounds of birds at 5:00 (pre-daylight savings change) and it was such a refreshing sound. While I'm sure the dawn alarm clock will get annoying at some point, right now hearing the sounds of birds outside just brings me joy. Maybe if this pandemic teaches me to appreciate the little things or acknowledge what is truly important, then one day I'll look back and think on it differently. Either way, brighter days are ahead!
